Dan wrote :: tb, Lots of things to talk about.

It certainly is the case that modern camber-induced sails place the boom opening much higher than in the days of UP Sails. The reason for this is because the boards used with sails like the Titan have a much wider outline and the sail is raked to windward more to reach the rider. If the boom cutout was the same height as days of yore, the booms would be at your lower chest or stomach when sailing in the straps.

Your harness lines probably are too short to effectively use the sail. Get lines at least 24", possibly more.

Now the big thing, your mast. For starters, the diameter Bic/UP mast is much larger than a current, carbon mast diameter. The cams certainly will hang up on that old mast. Your mast likely is too stiff for the sail, and almost certainly the wrong bend curve. Without getting into the details too deeply, suffice it to say that a large diameter mast combined with excessive mast stiffness in the area of the cams will certainly impede smooth cam rotation.

If you can, purchase the right mast for your sail. The Maui Sails SRS 75 460cm is the mast around which the Titan 7.0 is designed. I promise that you will sing songs of joy if you put that mast in your new sail.
[Post a reply] [Quote]

Topic : 2009 Titan Rigging
Started at 27th July 2010

US Nationals Final D...

philmcgain wrote :: US Nationals Final Day.

2 course races, finishing the slalom and Freestyle today.

Race 11.
We started in light breeze again around noon, so I took my 11m. I got off the line clean and above most of the fleet near the boat. Headed to shore to avoid the flood tide and get the lifts from Chrissy Field. I tacked about 200 feet from shore, but could have gone a little further. Paulo was just below me and got some lifts coming up to the mark on port tack, so he rounded in first, Schurmann got around second after getting a lift on port and I rounded close behind in third. Downwind the places remained but Paulo and Schurmann were well clear of me at this point. Both of them headed out on port tack into the flood tide, so I decided to tack across back to shore and get some ebb tide which was still moving as the tide changes here in San Francisco Bay. I didn?t see those guys until I was getting close to the upwind bouy again and realized I had catch right back up again. Paulo rounded just in front of Schurmann, with myself about 50 yards back.

Downwind was easy, we just headed out the middle of the bay in the flat water and cruised downwind to the bottom mark. Paulo rounded well clear then Schurmann and myself slowly getting closer. This time both Paulo and Schurmann tacked across early to head inshore, I decided to stay on Port tack for a bit longer to set myself up for only one more tack to the finish. I went out to the flood line, then tacked across onto Starboard. Paulo crossed well ahead, however I could see Schurmann was close. He crossed in front of me, but I knew he wasn?t going to lay the finish and would have tack again. This was my plan. I went in shore, found my layline and banged over to Port. I had a nice lift and good line to the pin end of the line, but it was going to close. Schurmann was now heading to the finish on Starboard tack. I got to the pin end and rounded up into the wind to get second place by a few feet.

Race 12
Same strategy, start near the boat using the flood tide to my advantage, hit the shore and lift up to the top mark. It worked to perfection again and rounded ahead of Schurmann and Seth Besse was in third. Paulo decided not to race this one. I took my 10m in this race and was a little underpowered on the downwind leg. Schurmann got through me at the bottom mark, so I rounded in second. It only took a few minutes to get upwind of Schurmann and put my pointing and board speed to work. I could see Schurmann being lifted upwind and realized he had his 11m, which helped him downwind, but now he was having to work very hard upwind. Probably would have been best to head inshore, but I wanted to cover Schurmann and the rest of the fleet. By half way up the leg I was 100 yards upwind of Schurmann and still lifting, in fact flying on my 10m TR6.

I couldn?t see the upwind mark because we were so far outside, but realized I had to tack across. I tacked blind and was over laying the mark by a ways, but Schurmann went even further than me, so it was all ok.

I rounded a few minutes ahead and cruised downwind and upwind to the finish. Great to win the final race.

Slalom
We were seeded into 4 groups with the top guys in the black fleet, Peiter Bijl, Schurmann, myself, Metayer, Besse, Jean, David Wells, Xavier Ferlet, Macrae Wylde and Chris Radkowski.
The wind was up and the course was ready to go. First heat I started at the pin and rounded in first, but got passed by Pieter right after the bouy. The wind was light on the inside and blowing pretty good on the outside, so it was difficult no matter what sail size you took. Peiter won the first heat, me second, Schurmann third.

Heat 2. I started at the boat on my 7.6, rounded the first bouy in fourth, Metayer was first, Schurmann second, Peiter third. That was the final placings for heat two.

Heat 3. Everyone was now pushing the starts. I started clean just above the pin with Schurmann very close to the line, but had a clear start. He rounded first, Peiter second, myself in third. Well two people were overearly and Pieter and Xavier Ferlet was the culprits. So Schurmann won the heat, I was second, Metayer third.

Heat 4. Started again at the pin, Schurmann below me. No way I would have been as close to the line as him, it was very very close and there were no drops in this slalom scoring, at this point in time I had the overall title in the back of my mind and didn?t want any screw ups. Pieter Bijl was carrying his overearly score of 10 points, so I decided to make sure I got away clean, but not push the line. I had a good start, rounded the first bouy in third behind Pieter and Schurmann. That was the way we finished.

Ingrid Larouche won the womens slalom using a pursuit 6.0. She dominated with 5 bullets. Jordan Reid easily won the Juniors using a TR5, winning five of the six heats.

Slalom final results.
Schurmann
Phil
Metayer.

Very good 5 days of racing and very satisfied with my performance, both for my sails, TR6?s and my old trusty Starboard 158.

Phil McGain
Overall US National Champion.
North American Formula Class Champion (as first American is awarded the title).
Grand Masters formula class Champion.
Long Distance Champion.

Ingrid Larouche- Womens Slalom Champion

Jordan Reid- Junior Slalom Champion
[Post a reply] [Quote]

Topic : US Nationals Final day report.
Started at 27th July 2010

Barry Spanier wrote :: what a great event, all the way from the organization to the challenging but fantastic conditions. St. Francis Yacht Club is the most wonderful host we could ask for, with facilities and equipment that made courses and race direction seem easy. The tight gbroup of crew made it possible to have course races and good slalom courses work smoothly on the same day and all the good wind was never wasted. There was even a great demonstratrion of Freestyle that eventually became scored and gave us winners and more.

Phil was totally on his A-game and sailed like a young fella, especially commanding in the long distance race. He always had plenty of speed and angle going up wind which is especially good to see from my point of view. racing is always racin g, so speed isn't everything, butg when you have it, it gives you tactical choices you might not otherwise find.

of course San Francisco gave us winter time temps on most of the days so the cold added to the difficulty of staying on focus for everyone, but the locals said it was just normal.

It was good to see Andy Brabdt do his winning thing in freestyle on his new Locos, Ingrid LaRouche winning women's slalom on a Switch, blazing the other ladies. Jordan Reid won the Jr Slalom on his new TR-5, and Bryan Matcalf-Perez got to try out a TR-6 on loan from Casey Hauser to help him into second in the Yellow Fleet.

Today I'm headed for Cal Sailing Club to do a rigging clinic in the morning and spread the word about going fast and having fun.

OH yeah... Phil was THE man all round, winning the whole show through totally consistent performance.

philmcgain wrote :: Day 4 US Nationals.

One Course race and some slalom heats.

We got under way in about 10-15 knots on the first upwind, so definitely the lightest race so far, so most of us were carrying 11m sails. The contenders all got away clean. Our friend from Portugal Miquel Martinho was the smartest on the first upwind after going all the way inshore and pegging the upwind mark. I went about half way in and rounded in 4th after Paulo and Schurmann. By the bottom mark Paulo had the lead over Martinho, who were both fairly clear of myself and Schurmann who rounded 3rd and 4th.

After rounding the bottom mark, I made a quick calculation in my head, flood tide in the middle of the bay, ebb tide on the shore, lifts coming off the yacht club shore, so I tacked while the rest of the fleet headed out into the heavy flood tide. I hit the beach, tacked and basically saw I had over stood the weather mark, but at the same time, I could see the fleet way outside and was in a very good position to be near the lead. I saw Paulo coming across, but that was it, i had catch up alot. At one stage I thought I would catch Paulo at the upwind bouy, but he rounded in front of me. I was now clear into second and chasing Paulo downwind. Paulo rounded the bottom mark and headed to the finish to take the bullet, I got second, Martinho third, Seth Besse 4th and Schurmann 5th.
Slalom time.

We were still on the elimination heats to decide who was going to go into a final. The wind was very light on the inside, almost calm at time, so we had to take big sails. I took an 8.4 my first heat and took the bullet. Peter Bijl won all his heats as well. My second heat I got to change down to my 7.6 and took a clear victory. We sailed two heats each but the winds got lighter and lighter, so they decided to stop for the day.

Formula results after 10 races.
Paulo- 11
Phil- 13
Schurmann- 21
Besse- 34
Metayer- 35.

Today is supposed to be 2 formula races and then they are running the finals of the slalom which will determine the winners.
[Post a reply] [Quote]

Topic : US nationals day 4. one CR and some slalom
Started at 24th July 2010

US Nationals Day 3.

philmcgain wrote :: US Nationals Day 3.

Long Distance and Slalom today. Long distance race from the yacht club upwind a mile or so, then downwind to a gate off the Yacht club, then another gate down near the city, then all the way down to treasure Island, back up to the gate at the city and then finish off the yacht club.

I?ve done many long distance races in this Bay area and had some bad and good memories. The bad memories were leading by miles and then not knowing the course, so one of my goals today was know the course well, so I could really race it with confidence and tactically be precise with each jibe and tack. Obviously my good memories are winning the Classic 3 years a row back in the 80?s after messing up the two years before that. So I ask all the questions at the skippers meeting about the course and I DID pay off.

Long Distance started around 12.30pm after two general recalls. It was difficult to get the fleet back off the line with a full ebb tide charging upwind, but we finally got away clean with the threat of the black flag. I got a good start on starboard down near the pin and all the contenders rounded the first bouy ready for the ride downwind to treasure Island. Paulo got around first, then Sherman, Seth and myself, Metayer, were all very close. Paulo was screaming downwind, but wasn?t getting away from us. I picked up Seth and Sherman before the yacht club, so went after Paulo on the long downwind towards Blossom rock Gate near the city.

I headed out into the middle of the bay a bit to get more wind and managed to pick up a bit on Paulo. When we hit the second gate, Paulo wasn?t sure of the course and started to head back upwind, so I took my opportunity and flew through the gate and quickly spotted the next bouy North of Treasure Island. By the time Paulo discovered his indiscretion I was off to the races and out of touch. I rounded the bottom bouy with a nice lead and began the long slog back upwind to the gate and then to the finish. I kept an eye on Sherman and Paulo, but I was clearing out with each tack and was able to pick up some good shifts heading out into the ebb tide and then cruising up close to the city for the shoreline lift. Before I knew it I was looking at the Marina and then found the finish line.
I crossed a few minutes ahead of Paulo, with Schurmann in third and Seth Besse putting in a good race in Fourth place.

WE did a few slalom heats but eventually the wind died and they cancelled for the day. Peter Bijl won his heat as did myself and Schurmann.

More Formula racing tomorrow and maybe Slalom.

So for the North American Formula championship, you get double points for the long distance race.

The points now after 9 races (two drops).
Paulo- 10
Phil- 11
Schurmann- 17
Metayer- 28
Besse- 30.
[Post a reply] [Quote]

Topic : US nationals day 3. I was ahead of Phil at the mark and he dove my stern absolutely lit on the XT 10. Phil was going super deep with out any loss of speed. I say 'putting the hammer" down a lot but that was putting the sledge hammer down. Wow is just about all I could say and I had the best seat in the house to watch it.

David
www.waterhound.com
[Post a reply] [Quote]

Topic : US Nationals day 2
Started at 22nd July 2010
