Gabriel Browne won the FW Brazilian Nationals
27th November 2008
I’m very glad at this moment, as I’ve reached something that I was looking for since the last couple of years. I won the FW Brazilian Nationals.First overall and First Youth at the same time, and for the first time in Brazil !!!!
So, first thing I have to say is thank you all for giving me such a competitive, fast and easy going rig. I knew I had the potential, but never really dreamed of it for last couple times. I never felt i was as fast or sometimes even faster than most of the guys, as I’m now feeling with TR-4. Since I got back home from PWA races and set my goals to Formula events, I felt I was going really fast with my sails. I have very strong opponents to practices with over here in Fortaleza, so I knew I had the speed. Now, it is just a case of improving my racing skills to be fighting for top places.
Over here is always windy and I managed to win the event with one race to go. Even if sometimes I did not have the best starts, I always managed to recover and get very well for the first mark. I saw the other guys were always switching and trying sizes, while I could stay with my 10.0 from the first until the last race. It is such a great combo. Avery fast sail with amazing power.
The other thing that let me be really confident was that I never had to worry about breaking my rig. That was the first time I came to race with no spare parts in case of breaking anything. That used to be an issue, to be honest. Since I started with TR-4 rigs, I found the performance and never had any kind of problem, so it was fun to just watch the other guys dealing with cambers, battens, heavy downhaul settings, etc...
Even my dad decided to get back to racing again, after 2 years. Even being the lightest person in the fleet( he is around 68 kg) and despite that he took the wrong course for a couple of times just because he was following my races from inside the course and forgot his, he managed to finish as a high 8th overall and 1st for grandmasters ( 45 +). He was on the TR-4 9.2 for all the races too and was showing good speed and having lots of fun with 20 knots. I guess he left some sailors very impressed, especially the ones who used to compete against him.
