MauiSails win big at the US Nationals

17th August 2006

The U.S. National racing championship was recently completed at Kanaha Beach Park on Maui, and there was great wind all week for the eighty-five competitors. Sailors from around the country (and a few from around the world), gathered at Kanaha for an action packed, wind blown week of racing. Kanaha is known as one of the best racing locations on the planet and the week of the Nationals was no exception, with winds blowing from fifteen to thirty knots all week. The direction was also perfect, being slightly onshore, windy all the way to the beach

MauiSails dominated the event with most of our sailors placing in the top three of their respective disciplines and divisions.

MauiSails win big at the US NationalsLeading the way in the 35-44 age group was veteran racer, Phil McGain, who convincingly won the course racing, taking four out of the six races using TR-2 7.0m and 6.6m. In second place was 2005 PWA World Champion, Micah Buzianis. Maui resident, Dave Weeks, (who went to work every day of the event) also used MauiSails for third place. Phil also placed second in the slalom and second overall.

Another stand out was young Mark Boersma, who won almost all his races in the slalom, course, and long distance events. Mark, racing in the 14+ boys division, has been a regular on Maui now for several season's and looked extremely comfortable in the challenging conditions. Also congratulations to Mark for winning the Tom Pace Sr. trophy for the most outstanding Junior at the event.

In the over 14 years girl's division, Ashley Baxter won the Overall, Course, and placed third in Slalom. Nique Vetromile also dominated her age group, the under 14 years girls, winning the Course, slalom and Overall. Baker Grant placed third in slalom in the boys 13 and under division.

Mike Yasak of Maui, racing in the Grand Masters division, placed second in slalom, second in Course, and second Overall.

Next year the Nationals are taking place in San Francisco off the Saint Francis Yacht club in August.
