Interview with Steven Van Broeckhoven
22nd June 2009
I don't think there's a difference between both Loco's to do the moves, but the Loco 2009 looks stronger and has good power. I start planing very early with the Loco 5,6. The Loco's are also very stable during duck-moves. That's why I prefer the Loco 4,8 more than the Legend 4,5 unless the wind gets too strong. I'm fan of the Loco, so it would be great to have a Loco 4,4 and 4,0 as well. Maybe it could be useful to have only four battens to make the sail even lighter, and the clew straight opposite to the boom. I don't know if that should work, but it would be really sick.
What move is at the core of your planned choreography for a heat, or do you simply go for it?
I just go for it. I don't plan a lot but I really like the power moves like burner, culo, Kono, and....
Is there some mental practice or other off water thing, like visualization or meditation, that keeps the complications of the tricks simple in your mind?
Not really, but I watch my moves on video to have the best feedback to make my moves work better. And then I go for it.
Do you do off water cross-training, and if so what sort of routine?
Very little. When I have time, I go running or swimming, but I'm always on the water windsurfing.
Do the events need a 'degree of difficulty' thing like ice skating has in order to sort out the complicated looking maneuvers, even for the judges?
Every freestyler can compete in the EFPT, but you need jump-moves. The level in EFPT is very high. I like it this way.
What's more fun... winning an event or having a good day in the waves?
Winning an event like EFPT is great for sure, because I never believed it could be possible. But a nice wave session with some friends is also very nice of course!
